It’s all but confirmed that Google will be launching its next-generation Pixel smartphones sometime this year. Now a new leak allegedly reveals what they are known internally — and yes, the marine theme continues. Like last year, two models are expected to launch, and they are reportedly codenamed ‘Muskie’ and ‘Walleye’.
The folks at AndroidPolice spotted the Walleye codenamed smartphone running on Android OS on the Android Open Source Project. While the Muskie wasn’t spotted on AOSP, it was revealed by a source, and the publication is quite confident about the authenticity of the leak. The report also confirms that like last year, the two models of the upcoming Pixel smartphones will be differentiated by size. Unfortunately, not much else is known about these smartphones.
As with such leaks, we will ask you to take it with the proverbial pinch of salt, but there’s no ignoring the pattern here. Google has stuck to marine-themed codenames for its Nexus and Pixel smartphones. The Nexus 6 was codenamed Shamu, while last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones were codenamed Sailfish and Marlin respectively
